In 2018 I went on a diving trip and got my AOW certificate in Sabah, Malaysia. There I was fascinated by the amazing views and vitality of the coral reefs. Gradually during my study in the university, I learned about the threats corals are facing and my willingness to contribute to the conservation efforts grew. Unfortunately, in Southern University of Science and Technology, where I got my bachelor’s degree, there wasn’t any projects on marine conservation.

I was admitted to UQ as a master’s student in environmental management in 2020. After a whole year of online study, I decided to take a gap. During this time, I worked in coral conservation as an intern in South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Science. There I helped out in labs as well as in fields and gained lots of working experience and knowledges around reef restorations.

I returned to campus in the middle of 2022 and am now working on a thesis focusing on the early settlement on rubble pieces after disturbance under the supervision of Professor Peter Mumby and Roima Paewai-Huggins. I’m looking forward to building on more skills and exploring my future career in this field.
